Vimeo is working on a new feature for the video hosting website. This new feature will allow a new pay-to-view and tip jar features, which allows content creators to earn revenue from their uploads by locking them behind a paywall and having the user pay a fee to watch the video.
The new features will be exclusive to Vimeo Plus users, who pay the $199 fee. With the tip jar, users can voluntarily contribute to filmmakers. The paywalled content will begin in a beta this Fall. Vimeo Plus members will be able to set pricing, rental duration, and regional availability. The features are expected to have a wider member rollout in early 2013.
With the ability for content creators to monetize their content, it’s nice for them but it is up to the users as to wether or not they are willing to pay for independent content.
